Use them in this order

You can open any tool by itself. Candidates who are still deciding when to sit usually get the most out of them in a fixed order, because each answer feeds the next question.

  1. Find your sitting. The AFK exam dates page lists every sitting with its registration deadline. Pick the one you can prepare for.
  2. Add up the cost. The pathway cost calculator starts from one try at each exam and shows the total in Canadian dollars. Raise the attempts if you want to budget for a retake.
  3. Plan the weeks. Enter your exam date and the hours you can give each week in the study planner. You get a plan weighted by the blueprint, with mock checkpoints.
  4. Keep the tooth chart open. Questions about teeth use the FDI system, and the tooth numbering converter turns a Universal or Palmer number from an older textbook into the one the exam uses.

What each tool does

Tooth numbering converter

Type a tooth number or tap a tooth on the chart. The converter shows it in FDI, Universal and Palmer, for all 32 adult teeth and all 20 baby teeth, with the quadrant in words. Dental programs around the world teach different systems, so a candidate trained in one country often meets another system for the first time on exam day. The AFK format page says which one NDEB uses.

Study planner

The planner counts the weeks from today to your exam date and divides your study hours across the 9 blueprint areas by their share of the exam. It places a mini mock in week 1, longer mocks as the weeks allow and a review week at the end. NDEB gives no recommended study time, so the planner asks for the hours you can keep up. See the format page for the areas and the exam dates for the sittings.

NDEB pathway cost calculator

Sitting the AFK costs $1,000 CAD, and that is only the first step. The calculator adds the application fee, the AFK, the ACJ, the NDECC and the Virtual OSCE, multiplies each exam by the tries you enter and shows a rough total in your own currency. The fees page lists every NDEB fee, and the pathway page explains the order of the exams.

Where the numbers come from

The fees, attempt limits and blueprint shares in these tools are read from NDEB pages and stored once, with the day we last checked them. The same figures feed the guide pages, so a tool and a guide page never disagree.

The results are for planning. The cost calculator does not know what NDEB will charge next year, and the planner does not know what you already understand. The exchange rates behind the currency estimate are a dated snapshot, shown with the estimate.

Questions about the tools

Do I need an account?

No. The tools work in your browser without signing in, and nothing you type is saved to an account.

How do I see where I stand today?

The tools help you plan. To find out how much you know today, take the free mini mock below and read the score breakdown.

Can I use them for other dental exams?

The tooth numbering converter works for any exam that uses tooth numbers. The planner and the cost calculator are built around the AFK and the NDEB pathway. We are adding the ADC, ORE and INBDE, which are listed on the exams page.

How current are the fees?

Each page shows the day we last checked the NDEB fee page. NDEB can change a fee at any time, so confirm the amount on its site before you pay.
