How the three systems count

FDI (World Dental Federation) uses two digits. The first is the quadrant: 1 upper right, 2 upper left, 3 lower left, 4 lower right (the patient's sides). Baby teeth use quadrants 5 to 8. The second digit counts from the middle: 1 is the central incisor, 8 the third molar. Tooth 16 is the upper right first molar. The World Dental Federation (FDI) two-digit tooth numbering system is used in all NDEB examinations.

Universal numbers adult teeth 1 to 32, starting at the upper right third molar, running across the upper arch to the upper left third molar (16), then down to the lower left third molar (17) and along the lower arch to the lower right third molar (32). Baby teeth use letters A to T in the same order. The Universal system is common in the United States.

Palmer writes the tooth number 1 to 8 (baby teeth A to E) inside a bracket that shows the quadrant. In plain text we write the quadrant first: UR6, UL3, LL8, LRA.

The AFK uses FDI. The AFK format page shows how the exam day runs and what the 200 questions cover.
