What each fee pays for
Application, CA$900
You pay it once, and it is non-refundable. The application is where NDEB verifies your documents and your identity and confirms that you graduated from a recognized dental program. NDEB does the verification itself and names no outside service. Its page lists the current credential verification time as 10 weeks, so apply well before the sitting you are aiming at.
AFK, CA$1,000
One sitting of the Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge. A written exam of biomedical and applied clinical science. It must be passed before the other exams. You pay again for each attempt, up to 3. See the AFK fees page for the dated list and scoring for the pass mark.
ACJ, CA$1,350
The Assessment of Clinical Judgement covers diagnosis, clinical decisions and radiograph interpretation. NDEB offers it after you pass the AFK, and allows up to 3 attempts.
NDECC, CA$6,500
Two components over two days, clinical skills and situational judgment, at the NDECC Test Centre in Ottawa. The fee is CA$3,250 for each of the two components. NDEB sets no number of tries for the NDECC. Candidates have five years to pass both components. It is the largest single fee in the process, so a retake of one component costs CA$3,250 and a full repeat costs CA$6,500.
Virtual OSCE, CA$1,750
The Virtual OSCE is the certification examination, required for licensure in Canada. It has 200 questions: 50 single answer multiple choice and 150 case based, with photos, radiographs and charts. NDEB allows up to 3 attempts. It has its own application fee of CA$450. NDEB's page does not say whether someone who finished the Equivalency Process pays it, which is why the calculator leaves it out until you tick the box.
Re-application, CA$400
NDEB lists an Equivalency Process re-application fee and calls it non-refundable. Its fee page does not say when a re-application is needed, so the calculator counts it only if you enter a number.
Score verification, CA$200
After a failing AFK grade you have 30 days from the day results are released to ask for a verification of the score. The same fee applies to the ACJ and the NDECC.
Smaller fees
NDEB charges CA$30 for each proof of successful completion. If you create a second application to the same process by mistake, NDEB refunds the application fee less a CA$200 administrative fee.

Three worked examples
| Path | What is in it | Total |
|---|---|---|
| First try at everything | Application, AFK, ACJ, NDECC, Virtual OSCE | CA$11,500 |
| One AFK retake | The first try path plus a second AFK | CA$12,500 |
| One AFK retake and a re-application | The same, with one CA$400 re-application fee | CA$12,900 |
| One NDECC component retake | The first try path plus one CA$3,250 component | CA$14,750 |
Each total leaves out the CA$450 Certification Process application fee. Add it if NDEB charges it to you. The AFK retake shows two lines because NDEB's fee page lists a re-application fee without saying when it applies. Set the re-application box in the calculator to match what NDEB tells you.
The gap between the first line and the others is the useful number. A retake of the AFK adds CA$1,000. A retake of one NDECC component adds CA$3,250. Putting in the study hours before the first sitting costs nothing in fees, and the study planner builds a weekly plan for it.

Costs outside the NDEB fee list
The total covers NDEB fees only. NDEB's fee pages cover nothing else, and we have no verified figure for the items below, so none is guessed here. Add your own numbers.
- Credential verification: NDEB does it as part of the application and its pages list no separate fee. Your university may charge to send transcripts or confirm your degree. Translation of documents is not addressed on NDEB's fee page.
- Travel: the AFK is on paper at Canadian locations and on computer at Prometric test centers in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The NDECC is held at the NDECC Test Centre in Ottawa over two days. Flights, hotel nights and time off work belong in your own budget.
- Study materials: NDEB's Protocol and its 100 question self-assessment are free. Paid question banks and courses are your choice and their prices change.
- License fees: after the Virtual OSCE, a provincial dental regulator issues the license and sets its own fees.
NDEB says tax receipts are generated each year and can be obtained from the miscellaneous tab of your NDEBConnect account, which helps when you claim the fees.
The figure in your own currency is a rough one. It uses a fixed rate, and the NDEB charges in Canadian dollars, so your card statement will differ. See the pathway page for the order of the exams.
Questions about the cost
What is the cheapest way through the NDEB Equivalency Process and Certification Process?
Pass each exam on the first try. That is the application fee, one AFK, one ACJ, one NDECC and one Virtual OSCE: CA$11,500 in NDEB fees, with the CA$450 Certification Process application fee on top if NDEB charges it to you. Every retake adds that exam's fee again.
Are the NDEB fees refundable?
The application fee is non-refundable. Someone who creates more than one application to the same process is refunded the application fee less the administrative fee. Fees paid for service requests are non-refundable. Read NDEB's own wording before you pay, because it can change.
What does it cost to withdraw from the NDECC?
There is a withdrawal fee of 50% for NDECC withdrawals that take place during the registration window. The NDECC is the most expensive single exam on the list, so check the registration window dates before you commit.
Does the total include the Virtual OSCE?
Yes, when you leave its attempts at 1 or more. The Virtual OSCE belongs to the NDEB Certification Process, which has its own fee page, and it is required for licensure in Canada. Its exam fee is CA$1,750 and its application fee is CA$450.
How many times can I retake an exam, and does that change the cost?
NDEB allows up to 3 attempts at the AFK, the ACJ and the Virtual OSCE. NDEB sets no number of tries for the NDECC. Candidates have five years to pass both components. More attempts mean more fees, so the calculator multiplies each fee by the number of attempts you enter.
Why is my total in my own currency only a rough figure?
NDEB charges in Canadian dollars. The figure in another currency uses one fixed, dated rate. Your bank or card sets the real rate on the day you pay and may add its own charge, so the statement will differ.
